A beacon of hope
The Ocean Cleanup stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against one of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges: ocean plastic pollution.
Founded by Boyan Slat in 2013, this Dutch non-profit organization has pioneered innovative technologies and initiatives to combat the growing threat posed by plastic debris in our oceans. Over the past 11 years, The Ocean Cleanup has made significant strides in its mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic waste and safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.
From Teenager to Plastic Master
The story of The Ocean Cleanup begins with a young inventor's audacious vision to tackle ocean plastic pollution. Boyan Slat, then a teenager, was struck by the enormity of the problem while scuba diving in Greece and witnessing more plastic bags than fish. Motivated by this experience, Slat embarked on a journey to develop a groundbreaking solution that would harness the power of ocean currents to collect plastic waste efficiently.
Floating barriers catch plastic before it hits the ocean
Central to The Ocean Cleanup's approach is the deployment of passive floating barriers, known as "Interceptor" and "System 001/B," in ocean gyres where plastic debris accumulates.
These innovative devices utilize natural ocean currents to concentrate and capture plastic waste, enabling more efficient cleanup efforts. The organization's commitment to technological innovation has led to the continuous refinement and improvement of its systems, maximizing their effectiveness in removing plastic pollution from the marine environment.
