Sweet & Sour Tofu Balls
These Sweet & Sour Tofu Balls are baked to perfection and coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce. Paired with steamed rice and topped with fresh coriander, this plant-based recipe is an easy, eco-friendly alternative to meat-based dishes. Great for weeknight dinners or meal prep!

Ingredients
Meatballs:
- 16 oz extra firm tofu
β - 1 oz dried wood ear mushrooms
β - 2 tbsp soy sauce
β - 1 shallot (or substitute with 1/2 brown onion)
β - 2 cloves garlic
β - 1 tbsp ketchup
β - 1 tbsp sriracha
β - 1/2 tsp black pepper
β - 6 tbsp cornstarch

Sweet & Sour Glaze:
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
β - 4 tbsp ketchup
β - 4 tbsp rice vinegar
β - 2 cloves garlic, minced
β - 1/3 cup water
β
To Serve:
- Cooked white rice
β - Fresh coriander leaves
Meatballs:
- 450 g extra firm tofu
β - 25 g dried wood ear mushrooms
β - 2 tbsp soy sauce
β - 1 shallot (or substitute with 1/2 brown onion)
β - 2 cloves garlic
β - 1 tbsp ketchup
β - 1 tbsp sriracha
β - 1/2 tsp black pepper
β - 6 tbsp cornstarch
β
Sweet & Sour Glaze:
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
β - 4 tbsp ketchup
β - 4 tbsp rice vinegar
β - 2 cloves garlic, minced
β - 80 ml (1/3 cup) water

To Serve:
- Cooked white rice
β - Fresh coriander leaves
Steps
Meatballs:
- Rehydrate the wood ear mushrooms by covering them with boiling water in a large bowl. Leave for 20 minutes.
β - Meanwhile, crumble the tofu. Finely mince the shallot and garlic. Preheat the oven to 200Β°C (400Β°F).
β - In a mixing bowl, add the crumbled tofu, minced garlic, minced shallot, soy sauce, ketchup, sriracha, and black pepper.
β - After the mushrooms have hydrated, drain them and chop into small pieces. Add the mushrooms and cornstarch to the tofu mixture. Mix until well combined.
β - Shape the mixture into approximately 16-18 tofu meatballs and place them on a lined baking tray. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden.

Sweet & Sour Glaze:
- Add all glaze ingredients to a medium saucepan and place over medium heat.
β - Simmer for 5-7 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
β - Once the meatballs are done baking, add them to the saucepan and gently stir to coat with the glaze.

Serve:
- Serve the tofu meatballs over white rice and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
